Holbox a wonder in extinction danger

Black hole is the meaning in Mayan language that ancient settlers gave to this singular corner of the Ekab chiefdom, today Quintana Roo state, the reason is that
the Yalahau lagoon separates Holbox from the mainland and it is in this space that there is a marine pit that from the surface gives the appearance of an immense and deep hole in the sea, this region and particularly this island has always been inhabited by the Mayans and their descendants.

A dark chapter of paradise.

At the end of the 19th century, the island of Holbox and its surroundings served as a refuge for survivors of Yucatan and Bacalar who escaped the so-called caste war, a movement of Mayan rebellion against the whites who were in the western Yucatan peninsula. Around 1890 some landowners like Salvador Alvarado with the help of the government of the dictator Porfirio Diaz created haciendas producing henequen and towns such as Solferino, Moctezuma, Punta Tunich, Yalahau, Chiquilá, San José, where the Mayans were exploited mainly in inhumane working conditions and deceptive work plans such as the stores of Ray, remember that the practice of slavery in Mexican lands had been abolished since 1810 year of Mexican Independence.

Inside the jungle, after a slide of trees and earth, Holbox opens its huge eyes of water, pupils inhabited by wings and dolphins … How is beauty measured? … When is too much.

Holbox currently has many attractions such as Isla Pájaros, La Laguna Yalahau, Isla Pasión, its pristine beaches, boutique hotels and its cuisine of the sea that will make our visitors the envy of their friends, we know you will find something that will delight everyone of the 5 senses.

Let’s help rescue Mexico.

Biosphere Reserve and Flora and Fauna Protection Area Yum Balam, Holbox is accessible by sea from Chiquilá, you can take the Ferry and in a 20 minute journey you will be here. This reserve was decreed in 1994 and is a natural refuge for several endangered species. Hence, tourism projects for this area are carried out with a sustainable approach, seeking the least impact on the various ecosystems of the area.

Within the island there are only some cars, the streets are white sand and the means of transport are usually golf carts, bicycle and on foot.

Holbox is world heritage.

In recent times the 1,500 inhabitants of Holbox have seen the island’s tourist infrastructure grow, in high season, this space of only 2.2 kilometers wide and 44 kilometers long, houses up to 20,000 inhabitants. However, services such as water, drainage and light, are being widely exceeded. Thanks to some private foundations and government agencies, it has begun to become aware that the damage caused to the water table and to the species of flora and fauna of the place, may be irreversible due to the rapid growth.

This was one of the best kept secrets in the Caribbean and could continue to be one of the natural paradises of Mexico, but we must be aware that these ecosystems need our care and that of our visitors, so we invite you to protect together with us the wonderful island of Holbox before we can not share it with our future generations.
