For its part, the Plaza America Center provides a wide range of options for travelers and residents, with shops, restaurants, cafeterias and a special reserve for businessmen who require events or work meetings in a stimulating environment.

How it was built in paradise

When we hear the word Varadero, we immediately associate in our mind a beautiful beach and later tourism, but in the beginning these paradisiacal lands were populated by aborigines, as evidenced by the remains found in the caves of Ambrosio and the Muslims in the peninsula. of Hicacos very close to the destination that we now know as Varadero, these discoveries as well as the pictograms found, are not only of interest for the region, but are important for all of Cuba.

Towards century XIX after several attempts to settle down in the raigón finally settlers of the now municipality of Cárdenas, attracted by the fine sands and crystalline waters, managed to acquire earth in the peninsula, where later they would construct the church, the market and a park, that would be cornerstone for the development of the region, years later the town hall approved the settlement, so that December 15, 1887 is considered the date on which Varadero is founded.

After the beginning of the twentieth century came the entrepreneurs of high draft, such as Enrique Torres, builder of the hotel that will carry his name and one of the jewels of architecture of that time and that sadly was demolished in the 60’s, at the end of 1920, Éleuthère would arrive Irénée du Pont wealthy North American who obtained his fortune based on the sale of dynamite, du Pont acquires half of Varadero that by then had a very favorable reputation as a resting place, and it was here where his famous Xanadu Mansion was built , located in the San Bernardino boulder and which had a nine-hole golf course that made a total contrast with the global decline of the economy of those years.

The natural caves of the peninsula served as a hiding place for pirates and fugitive slaves. In one of them, the cave of Ambrosio, is the largest set of pictographs in the Caribbean area.

Growth of tourism in the area

Between the 1920s and 1930s, wealthy Cuban and American characters settled along the beach in Varadero, including Thomas Coleman Du Pont de Nemours, great-grandson of the founder of the transnational DuPont.

After the triumph of the revolution in 1959 the tourist industry was nationalized in all of Cuba and what was the park and its surroundings now form the center of the town where innumerable concerts, festivals, would later take place, making Varadero a cultural center and platform for Cuban music that would unleash in the 80’s with the first edition of the International Carnival of Varadero, an annual event on the island.

Due to the collapse of the socialist bloc, the task of building a hotel infrastructure financed by international investors, consisting of 4 and 5 star hotels to make funds through tourism and combat the economic crisis suffered by the country, is undertaken in parallel the growth of tourist activity is neglecting the municipal sites such as the park, the cinema and other cultural centers, so the International Carnival of Varadero sees its end in the year 1995 and integral tourism redirects the flow of visitors to the new “All Inclusive” complexes. In 2010 the municipality of Varadero disappears and is reintegrated in the municipality of Cárdenas.
